Add to basketNew York, Harper & Row, 1963. 26,5 x 23,5 cm, format à l'italienne, non paginé.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. A nice inscribed hardcover copy of Sendak's classic children's book, which won the Caldecott Medal in 1964. This is an undated vintage copy, after 1974 (the rear flap of the dust jacket says that the illustrations were re-engraved from the original art in that year). The jacket flap price of $8.95 suggests a late 1970s or early 1980s date, which is when this copy was inscribed. The inscription reads, "To Peter Schaefer-hi! Maurice Sendak, June 5, '81." The book is near fine; the jacket has tanned some at the spine and there are a few short edge tears. The lower corner of the front flap is clipped, as issued, to remove the library binding price.

Add to basketHard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Maurice Sendak (illustrator). Later Edition. Early printing of the children's classic of anger management and forgiveness, in quite good shape. Third state, circa 1965-66, hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book, tiny spot of silverfish nibbling to lower rear corner, hint of bumping to spine ends; jacket tanned near spine with lower corner (library price) of front flap clipped, $3.95 price remains above. And so, into the bibliographic weeds: first and many early printings of the BOOK are indistinguishable - until at least the early 1970s, ALL have "Copyright 1963 by Maurice Sendak.Library of Congress catalog card number: 63-21253" on the title page, as this copy does: an intact jacket is required to determine the printing. This copy, jacket price $3.95, is the third state, from around 1965-1966. The first and second states are priced at $3.50 on the upper corner of the flap (the lower corner had a library price, clipped for retail sales - around 1970, it was $3.79); per Hanrahan, the 1963 first state has NO Caldecott Medal, won in 1964, on the jacket, nor mention of of it; and three paragraphs discussing Sendak and his work on the FRONT flap. Later states have two reviewers' blurbs on the front jacket flap and the three paragraphs on Sendak moved to the BACK flap, with note of the Caldecott Medal. Books by Sendak listed on the flap include The Sign on Rosie's Door (1960), the Nutshell Library (1962), and a couple of earlier titles. Later jackets list later titles, and yet later mention an award Sendak won in 1970. According to Hanrahan's sources, 25,000 copies of the first printing were ordered, but the book was recalled after the Caldecott was won, and revised jackets printed some time in 1964. Size: Oblong Quarto.

Condition: As New. Maurice Sendak (illustrator). Lithograph print by Maurice Sendak on Acid-free Paper. PRINT. Size: 20" x 6" (510mm x 165mm). A beautiful large full colour print of this classic image. Written and illustrated in 1963 by Maurice Sendak, 'Where The Wild Things Are' is one of the most popular picture books ever published. The book has been adapted into an animated short, an Opera, and a motion picture, and the picture book itself is still in print over 50 years after it's initial publication. This gorgeous print was published in 1971 as an edition specially re-photographed from the original artwork held at the Sendak Archives at the Rosenbach Museum & Library. The result is this fabulous collector's edition panoramic print presenting Sendak's entire painting, as opposed to having to see it printed with the gutter of the book in the centre of the image. Copyright 1963 printed on reverse. (1.01).
