Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. When The Lion Feeds, Wilbur A. Smith, Hardback, Heinemann, 1964, First Edition, Second Impression Scarce first edition copy of Wilbur Smith's first novel (the only one to show Wilbur A. Smith as opposed to Wilbur Smith as the author). A second impression printed before publication. The book introduces the Courtney family, becoming a series that Smith would follow throughout his writing career. After 10,000 copies were sold the Publication Control Board banned the book in South Africa on the grounds of blasphemy and obscenity, the ban only being removed in 1975. The binding is tight with a slight lean, the boards clean with slight crease and nibbling to the spine. Gilt lettering is clear and bright. The endpapers and pages are clean without tears, marks or inscriptions with minor foxing to the very odd page. Page edges are toned in line with age. The clipped jacket has retained its colouring well. Nibbling to the top and bottom of the spine and some rubbing to the creases. All considered a very good copy. Will be dispatched promptly, fully insured and professionally packaged. We send books around the world on a daily basis and are regularly complemented on the quality of our books, accuracy of description, sturdiness of our packaging and speed of despatch.

Here is an EXCEEDINGLY RARE and collectible copy of Wilbur Smith's first novel WHEN THE LION FEEDS SIGNED "Wilbur A. Smith" First printing of the first British edition (reprinted before publication); this copy is NOT plagued by foxing, nor has it been restored in any way. Wilbur only signed a small number of copies where he included his middle initial (A. is for Addison). Wilbur explained why he ceased including the "A": "I thought it [the inclusion of the A in his signature] looked pretentious and it certainly took up much time when I was signing." Very scarce and desirable; imported from South Africa (originally sold in Pretoria) The photos are part of the description, so study them carefully, as they are very helpful, and of the actual book being sold.
