The greater part of it was originally published in Blackwood's Magazine; but that lacked the connection which I have now given to the conclusion of my independent journey to and from the Victoria N'yanza, which is the great source or reservoir of the Nile. With an engraved frontispiece, folding map, and the double-page map of the Somali Coast. 8vo, bound in old half calf and marbled boards, the spine with raised bands gilt ruled, the compartments with central ornamental gilt tools, contrasting red and green morocco lettering labels gilt. x, 372. A portion of the large folding map in facsimile, some occasional evidence of damp confined primarily to the foredges or very outer edge of some leaves. RARE FIRST EDITION. This work is composed of two parts, the "Journal of Adventures in Somali Land," and the "Journal of a Cruise on the Tanganyika Lake." Speke had apparently, at the end of the Punjab campaign in 1849, developed the idea to explore Central Africa with a view to collecting hitherto unknown species of fauna. At the same time the Bombay government was organizing an expedition to Somaliland under Lieutenant Richard Burton. Speke had originally planned to travel into Africa alone--a very unwise proposal--and James Outram, the political resident at Aden, at first forbid him. Outram then suggested that Speke join Burton's expedition, which he did. It was during this expedition that Speke claimed to have discovered the true source of the Nile, but Burton and his associate, James Macqueen, immediately disputed his claims. Speke was granted command of a second expedition in 1860 to explore the Victoria Nyanza and verify his earlier findings. In the years 1863 and 1864 Speke published, respectively, JOURNAL OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE and this book, WHAT LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE. Despite the confusing titles, the "Journal" actually covers his second expedition, with James Grant, while "What Led To" narrates his first journey in the company of Burton.

This is the scarcer of Speke's two books on his Nile expeditions, and the one which describes his expedition with Richard Burton and defends his assertion (correct, but contested by Burton and others) that Lake Victoria was indeed the source of the Nile River. Fold-out map has some old cellophane tape repairs on the verso of a few fold points, double page sketch map has an old, small cellophane tape repair on the verso to reinforce a tiny closed tear, title page has a small, faint stamp of a private library, minor wear to a few internal pages, else a near fine, tight copy of an important and scarce book.

First edition. Undoubtedly the less common of Speke's two books on his exploration of the African lake regions, containing his accounts of the momentous discovery of Lakes Victoria and Tanganyika. Although it was published the year following his Journal of the Discovery of the Source of the Nile, this work documents the first expedition arranged by the Royal Geographical Society, during which his corrosive rift with Burton first developed. Armorial bookplate of the noted geographer and hydrographer Alexander George Findlay the younger to the front pastedown, and with some pencil notations to the margins. Findlay was "active in mapping the discoveries being made in Africa and the quest for the source of the Nile. He was a friend of David Livingstone and made the official maps of the routes taken by Burton and Speke in their journeys in 1858-9" (ODNB). With the publisher's 32-page catalogue at the end.
