First edition copy of FitzRoy's pioneering work on weather forecasting. Often recognised for his time as the captain of the HMS Beagle during Darwin's infamous voyage, FitzRoy was also also the founder of what is now known as the Met Office and conducted invaluable research into understanding the patterns and movement of the weather (he is the originator of the term 'forecast'). With 16 lithograph plates, two in colour on blue paper, an appendix and index at the rear, pp. [xii], 464, [iv], [16 plates], [4-page advertisement]. First Edition. Bound in blue horizontally ruled cloth, gilt titles to spine, brown endpapers. Octavo In good condition, rubbing to corners and edges, gilt bright, cloth a little marked but generally clean, hinges weak and starting to perish, textblock reasonably firm and square, 1cm tear to inner fold of one plate, very light water stain to pp. 141 - 144, some light foxing, pages otherwise clean.
