No Binding. Condition: Good. PETER FORCE (1790-1868) was a politician, historian and publisher who was twice elected Mayor of Washington, DC. (1836-1840) Force assembled and published an extensive collection of documents from the Revolutionary War under the title American Archives, which included a copy of the Declaration of Independence, made from the original copper plates engraved by William J. Stone in 1823. Offering a 7 7/8 x 12 7/8 partially printed Document Signed, "Peter Force/Mayor," front and verso, City of Washington, February 8, 1838, indenture relating to the sale of a parcel of land and its unpaid taxes. Force was the first scholar to discover that the so-called Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence of 1775 was not what it claimed to be. Consequently, he published the declaration of independence, or Notes of Lord Mahon's History of the American Declaration of Independence. Force served in the Washington militia during the War of 1812. The document is prominently and boldly signed by Force. Light toning. Partial splitting to the folds, reinforced with archival tape.
