Né dans un petit hameau de la vallée de Chamonix, Armand Charlet (1900-1975) est unanimement considéré comme le plus grand guide français du XX? siècle. Dans Vocation alpine, il évoque sa jeunesse et son apprentissage jusqu'au "clou" de sa carrière : la première traversée des aigu…illes du Diable en 1928. Un grand guide, Armand Charlet ? Bien plus : un homme devenu légendaire ! Sur l'aiguille Verte, sa montagne de prédilection, il ne tracera pas moins de sept nouveaux itinéraires, et la gravira plus de cent fois. Son talent exceptionnel est si vite reconnu que, dès 1924, un col est baptisé à son nom ! Il mène ses clients à grande allure, fait preuve sur la glace d'une technique incomparable et se montre, sur le rocher, d'une audace folle qui l'amène à franchir sans pitons (encore presque inconnus à Chamonix) des passages d'extrême difficulté, au prix parfois d'acrobatiques coincements de piolet dans une fissure. Armand Charlet, exigeant pour les autres autant que pour lui-même, se plaint parfois de ne pas trouver de "clients" à sa mesure. C'est que, dans les années qui suivent la Grande Guerre, l'alpinisme français est en pleine mutation : le Groupe de Haute Montagne réunit un petit cénacle d'amateurs pour lesquels l'alpinisme se conçoit sans guides. Le handicap est d'autant plus grand pour Charlet qui doit concilier les exigences du métier avec son ambition évidente de marquer l'histoire. On croisera aussi, au fil des pages, un jeune alpiniste débutant mais enthousiaste, qui fait ses premiers pas en haute montagne en compagnie d'Armand Charlet.
