Gently toned, very occasional grubby fingerprints. Else, clean and tight. Very good A rather nice copy of the attractive first Scott Library edition of Wollstonecraft's important proto-feminist philosophical polemic, the first edition to feature a Prefatory Note by her C19th biographer, Elizabeth Robins Pennell. An extraordinary woman in her own right, Pennell (1855-1936) was "an adventurous, accomplished, self-assured, well-known [Anglo-American] columnist, biographer, cookbook collector and art critic" as well as a pioneer cycle tourist (who followed Chaucer's and Sterne's routes by bike). Based for much of her adult life in Britain, her important cookery book collection is held by the Library of Congress.

The main part of her book was written in an equally plain and direct style, and it was this, as well as the idea of writing a book on the subject at all, which caused the outcry which ensued" (PMM). In her life Wollstonecraft was the lover of Gilbert Imlay, the wife of William Godwin, and the mother of Mary Shelley; in her writing she is the daughter of Paine and Rousseau and the mother of the entire feminist movement. Rare first edition of this landmark work in both Enlightenment philosophy and the history of feminism. Octavo, bound in three quarter morocco over marbled boards by Randolph & English. From the library of Virginia chancery lawyer Henry G. Cannon with his ownership inscription to the pastedown and that of his father, the book's previous owner, to the top portion of the title page which has been excised and supplied. Period notation from presumably a member of the Cannon household to the first page of the dedication to M. Talleyrand-Pà rigord, Late Bishop of Autun, "This Talleyrand is the man who said that Language was given to man to conceal his thoughts And his Grace of Autun certainly acted up to his favorite sentiment E.G.C." Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Pà rigord was Napoleon's chief diplomat during the years when French military victories brought one European state after another under French hegemony. Wollstonecraft was prompted to write the Rights of Woman after reading Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Pà rigord's 1791 report to the French National Assembly, which stated that women should only receive a domestic education; from her reaction to this specific event, she launched a broad attack against sexual double standards, indicting men for encouraging women to indulge in excessive emotion. In very good condition with some intermittent foxing. An nice example with unique provenance. Overall, exceptionally clean internally. âWollstonecraftâs major work caused an outcry when it was published and is hailed as a cornerstone of feminismâ¦. The central theme of the work on womenâs rights was that they should be educated to carry a responsibility in society equal to that of men. In disagreement with Rousseau⦠Wollstonecraft urged ârational fellowship instead of slavish obedienceâ (Legacies of Genius 64). "Although Wollstonecraft is best known as a feminist thinker, her philosophies are not limited to womenâs issues⦠Wollstonecraft advocates liberty and equality for all humanity. Advancing arguments for political rights, she argues for the removal of traditional injustices of rank, property, class, and gender⦠The key to freedom lies in the reasoning individual conscience, not in laws or dogma⦠Wollstonecraft adamantly asserts that education inculcating reason will eventually emancipate all humankind from all forms of servitude (political, sexual, religious, or economic)â (Great Thinkers of the Western World, 322-327). The landmark work was written in a âplain and direct style, and it was this as well as the idea of writing a book on the subject at all, which caused the outcry that ensued⦠she argued for equality of education for both sexes⦠and co-education. It was a rational plea for a rational basis to the relation between the sexes⦠Its chief object was to show that women were not the playthings of men but ought to be their equal partners, which they could be only if they were educated in the same wayâ (PMM 242).

Add to basketFirst edition. The author's featured works include the unfinished Gothic novel Maria, which dramatizes the feminist rhetoric of Vindication; a series of Lessons for her daughter, which demonstrate the delight she experienced upon becoming a mother; and her Letters, which, among other matters, record her affair with Gilbert Imlay and her despair when their relationship ended. Like the Vindication, this assemblage reveals an author centuries ahead of her time in feminist thought. Maria illuminates the vulnerabilities of women living in societies that are patriarchal by law and tradition, showing how easily they can be deprived of their children, financial security, personal freedom, and respectability by unscrupulous men. It also tackles workplace inequality, protesting the injustice of women forced to engage in low-skilled labour while their male counterparts enjoy intellectually stimulating employment. Whilst the eponymous protagonist of Maria is a wealthy heiress, Wollstonecraft also dedicates narrative time to women of poorer backgrounds and includes a sympathetic portrayal of sex work. It predates similarly groundbreaking novels such as Ruth and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and is far more radical in outlook. Wollstonecraft's husband and the father of Mary Shelley, William Godwin, was responsible for the collation and publication of this text. His letters reveal his heartbreak at his wife's death in 1797 (Kegan, pp. 275-6). Other works included in the volumes are Cave of Fancy, On Poetry, and Hints, Chiefly designed to have been incorporated in the Second Part of the Vindication. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. xvi, [17], 274pp + [1] contents + [1] ads. First American edition, published the same year as the British first edition; and preceding the Boston edition, also published the same year but advertised for sale before the Philadelphia edition. Bound in modern three-quarter calf over marbled boards with spine elaborately stamped in gilt. Very Good. Pages browned and foxed, some edge-worn. Title page is brittle, frayed along the edges with loss to the top taking out the "A VI" of the title; early owner marking to title page and following page. A famous rebuttal of contemporary conservative thinker Burke, who decried the French Revolution and individual rights. Wollstonecraft asserted that both sexes should have equal access to education, thereby bettering women as citizens of an enlightened republic. Many have viewed the work as proto-feminist, for it anticipates feminism in many ways, even though no such organized movement would exist for decades. Critic and author Katha Pollitt writes in a recent introduction to the book, "Mary Wollstonecraft was not the first writer to call for women to receive a real, challenging education. But she was the first to connect the education of women to the transformation of women's social position, of relations between the sexes, and even of society itself." As such it represents the peak of radical Enlightenment thought, and a very important step towards universal suffrage.
