1st edition. Edmund Spenser made his name as a poet, as the author of The Faerie Queene, but made his living as an official in the royal service in Ireland. This 'View' was compiled in 1596, and was probably useful to senior officersas a statement of official opinion. However, it tells us much about the poet, his interest in history, his love of beautiful country his personal loyalties, and the uneven emotional complex bred of contrasts of experience. Hard covers, no dust jacket. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st edition. Inscribed by the editor on ffep. (to Lord Nuffield, then a Baronet). A remarkable document prepared by Spenser while serving in Ireland; none too complimentary in parts, it constitutes an eye-witness account of the state of late 16th century Ireland in the form of a dialogue between Eudox and Iren. The language is of Shakespearian vintage and is thus a little obscure in places. About a third of the book is taken up with the editor?s Commentary, with extensive end-notes.
