Auflage des Abbt (von 1772) erstmals zuweist und als deren Schöpfer er Chodowiecki (ebenso Rümann 2) nennt: 'Die Tugend führt, den ihr zu folgen entschlossenen Herkules, zum Tempel des Verdienstes. An dem Tempel, hängen die drey Merkzeichen der Arten des Verdienstes, die der Verf. erwähnt, (.) nämlich eine Leyer, eine Keule und ein Oelzweig. Herkules will nach der Keule greifen, die Tugend zeigt ihm aber jene beyden Sinnbilder, und warnet ihn in seiner Wahl nicht allzu voreilig zu seyn'. Kurioserweise entspricht auch die Inschrift des Tempels 'Bene Meritis' der bei Engelmann genannten zweiten, korrigierten Fassung des Stichs (bei Chodowiecki!).
