Bedford). Première édition des ?uvres complètes de Gresset. Elles furent im…primées par Pierre Didot l'Aîné. L'illustration comprend 8 figures hors texte en taille-douce d'après Moreau le Jeune, et un portrait-frontispice. Les figures ont été gravées par Simonet et de Ghendt. Le portrait-frontispice est en principe non signé, cependant cet exemplaire en présente un état supplémentaire signé Nattier et Saint-Aubin. Cet état est inconnu de Cohen. Exemplaire sur grand papier vélin présentant un 2e état des figures avant la lettre ainsi que pour 3 planches, l'eau-forte pure. Il a de plus été enrichi de nombreuses figures : - Suite complète des 6 figures de Moreau réalisées pour l'édition de 1794. - 9 figures signées d'Achille Deveria. - 5 figures non signées, d'évidence plus anciennes. - 4 portraits supplémentaires de l'auteur dont certains sont des variantes ou des démarquages du frontispice, et 2 autres portraits dont un de Jean-Baptiste Rousseau. Protégé de Madame de Pompadour, remarqué par FrédéricII, admiré par Jean-Baptiste Rousseau et mis en musique par Jean-Jacques pour être finalement l'objet, à titre posthume, d'un éloge signé du jeune Robespierre, Gresset (1709-1777) d'ancien jésuite devint l'incarnation de l'homme d'esprit. Il laissa à ses potentiels successeurs ce sage avertissement: "L'esprit qu'on veut avoir gâche celui qu'on a." Reliée en tête d'exemplaire, une lettre autographe de Gresset à l'auteure des Lettres d'une Péruvienne, Mme de Graffigny: à défaut d'être nommée, la destinataire est clairement identifiable puisque Gresset la remercie de lui avoir adressé sa pièce Cénie, dont il fait évidement l'éloge. La lettre est datée Amiens, octobre 1750. La pièce, comme il le précise, connaissait alors un très grand succès: "L'impression justifie parfaitement tout le succès des représentations de cette pièce, et doit même y ajouter aux yeux de ceux qui savent réfléchir sur toutes les beautés et tenir compte de tous les détails." Ce succès prolongeait celui, tout récent (1747) des Lettres d'une Péruvienne dont Gresset convoque ici l'héroïne à l'appui de son dithyrambe: "Enfin j'ai reconnu partout les pinceaux tendres et brillants à qui nous devons la charmante Zilia." L'un comme l'autres grands connaisseurs du théâtre, Gresset et Mme de Graffigny n'en avaient pas moins dans ce domaines des conceptions parfois fort opposées, la seconde ayant dès dix ans plus tôt critiqué dans sa correspondance avec Devaux certaine audace préromantique de Gresset, qui dans son ÉdouardIII n'avait pas hésité à tuer une personnage sur scène.
