Wraps. Octavo, original illustrated wraps, b&w illus, pp 64. Pages toned. Lightly marked to the rear wrap. This is the British edition of Unknown Worlds (also known as Unknown), an American pulp fantasy fiction magazine, published from 1939 to 1943 by Street & Smith, and edited by the legendary science fiction writer and editor John W. Campbell. Unknown was a companion to Street & Smith's science fiction pulp, Astounding Science Fiction, which was also edited by Campbell at the time. The US edition folded in 1943 due to wartime shortages: the British edition (which was also sold in Australia) started in 1939 and continued until 1949. The magazine is generally regarded as the finest fantasy fiction magazine ever published, despite the fact that it was not commercially successful, and in the opinion of science fiction historian Mike Ashley it was responsible for the creation of the modern fantasy publishing genre. This issue contains: a novel, "The Golden Bridle", by Jane Rice; two novelettes, by Henry Kuttner and Robert Bloch; and short stories by L. Sprague de Camp, Lester del Rey, Theodore Sturgeon, and Vic Phillips.
