[From front flap] The volume presented here is organized around two themes: the institutional and political history and the history of science and culture. From the chronological point of view, the most important division is that between medieval and early modern history on one hand, and modern history on the other. The date for the watershed is 1806, the year in which the Veneto region came to be part of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy and the University of Padua lost the autonomy which it had enjoyed under the previous regimes, from the Commune (1222 - 1318) and the signoria (1318 - 1405) to the long Venetian domination (1406 - 1797) and the extremely short Habsburg rule (1798 - 1805). After 1806 it was rendered uniform to the other Universities of the Kingdom, Pavia and Bologna, which had already received a single organizational structure. Over the course of the second and the third periods of Austrian rule (1813-48 and 1848-66) the institutions which the University of Padua referred to were those of Vienna, Prague, and Pavia, while, after the annexation of the Veneto region to Italy in 1866, it was inserted, not without difficulty, into the University system of the Kingdom of Savoy and was run on the basis of the Casati law of 1859. 1806 was also an important date for the history of science and culture as it marked the disappearance of the traditional division of the Stadium into a 'university' of jurists and a 'university' of artists (that is to say physicians, 'philosophers' and theologians), and the beginning of a system based on faculties. . . . A place of teaching, but also research, the University of Padua has had among its masters and pupils figures of great international renown in the most disparate fields from medicine to law, from theology to philosophy, from literature to engineering from astronomy to physics from politics to religion. An immense cultural and civil heritage, a role at the very forefront of the education of scientific, political and professional elites: it is to the rediscovery of the past of a University which Erasmus of Rotterdam exalted as "a highly-equipped and most famous emporium of the best disciplines", of a past in which the present has embedded its roots and rediscovers its own identity that this volume is dedicated.
