Burdon Sanderson was second only to Michael Foster in the transformation of British physiology from a backwater to the leader of the world, in the last three decades of the 19th century. O'Connor, Founders of British Physiology, pp. 141-46. D.S.B. 2: 598-99. Geison, Michael Foster and the Cambridge School of Physiology, pp. 154-55 and 356-61. Copy of Francis Gotch (with his signature on title page). Pencil and ink notes in text. A fine association copy. Gotch was Burdon Sanderson's assistant at University College, London, and later at Oxford, before succeeding him as Waynflete Professor of Physiology at Oxford. Gotch remarked, in the article he contributed to the D.N.B on Burdon Sanderson: "In 1874 he succeeded William Sharpey as Jodrell professor of physiology at University College. The courses of practical teaching which he organised in that capacity served as models for instruction in the medical currciulum of the country." See Garrison-Morton 1420.1 and 1525.1 for Gotch's own contributions to physiology.
