Under the Volcano by Malcolm Lowry 1947 First Edition - First State Jacket Ex-Lib; Often regarded as one of the greatest works of 20th century literature Under the Volcano depicts the tragic disintegration of an alcoholic British consul living in Mexico reflective of the broader disintegration of society amidst the Spanish civil war. The book takes place within a single day yet traverses the entire lifetime of our hero, or victim, Geoffrey Firmin, whose life is inextricably tied to that of Lowry's.Lowry masterfully displays the illusory control, the utter incoherence, at other times crystal lucidity of Firmin, as he drifts between inebriation and severe inebriation in what is the best literary depiction of alcoholism. VG+ book, slight forward lean to spine, firm binding, stamps to front and rear end papers. Less marks than typical ex-lib.No card pocket past or present. VG- DJ sticker mark to Spine, mild rubbing and a few small closed tears.
