A 2nd print of the American edition of novel from the late 1930s - later made into a 1949 Alfred Hitchcock film featuring Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten, and Michael Wilding. The DJ has wear at the edges, flap folds, and spine hinges. It's internally reinforced with brown tape along the edges and folds. The book itself is in very nice shape with the only flaw worth noting is the faint remains of something glued to the FFEP (book plate?). Overall a good to very good copy of a scarce item.…

All pages bear a uniform discolouration due to age, yet most are foxed. Albeit light. Previous bookseller's stamp on front pastedown. Otherwise this book is in fair condition. Dust wrapper has some rubbing at the edges. Back cover lightly scratched, rubbed and discoloured. Head and tail of spine well worn with small chips and creases. Simpson was a member of the Detection Club along with Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christie, Baroness Orczy, and a host of lesser lights, as well as the founder of the Oxford Women's Dramatic Society; a notable early work, ENTER SIR JOHN, joined the two worlds of theatre and murder and was the first of her novels to be filmed by Hitchcock, as MURDER! (1930). UNDER CAPRICORN was the second, eliciting wildly varied reactions. The film was a box-office failure, starring Ingrid Bergman and suffering the repercussions of her contemporary scandal; though derided by critics disappointed to find a guilt-ridden gothic romance of colonial Australia where they expected a thriller, it was also praised by Cahiers du Cinema as one of Hitchcock's best.
