William Hewison (1925-2002) was a prominent contributor to?Punch?Magazine as well as its Art Editor for 24 years. He made a substantial mark on the world of British cartoons and caricatures from the 1950s until the turn of the millennium. [From front jacket flap] Journalists immersed in their noble and dedicated task of informing, educating, criticizing and exposing us poor civilians, tend to have little energy left over for self-scrutiny. In this collection of words and drawings, a wry glance is cast over some of die types more readily evident from die nature of their writing. As the characters portrayed are completely imaginary, their creator was dismayed to hear that in several instances two or three real people had been identified as die originals of particular portraits. These specimens are primarily derived from the British scene, but in many respects are pretty universal. Among types included are the Grapeviner, the Try- Anything Girl, die Public Eye, the Sporting Wordsmith, and the Rack-and- Pinion Priest.
