Pasted in as frontispiece is a photostat of a photo of Herbert, with facsimile signature below. 1 vols. 11 x 8 1/2 inches; 22 typewritten pages, 20 of them single-spaced. This was lot 279 in the Harry Worcester Smith sale of Frank Forester material, New York 1931, described as: "A Rare and Desirable Herbert Item. The papers supporting the "Proposed Game Laws" are entitled, "The Destruction of Wild Animals", "The Preservation of Insect-Eating Birds", and "Legislation for the Protection of Birds". This work appeared serially in "Turf, Field and Farm" for 1865, and it was from one of the very few extant files of that rare periodical that this copy was made." The Game Law revision was Herbert's last project he took his life with a pistol shot in a New York hotel two weeks later, on May 17, 1858, at the age of 51.
