First collected edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Clive Hirschhorn, with all best wishes from Alan Bennett". This book is accompanied by the publisher's review slip. Kafka's Dick premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in 1986, and The Insurance Man, a play for television, was first broadcast on the BBC on 23 February the same year. Both were directed by Richard Eyre. Kafka's Dick first appeared in a limited run in 1986, but this is the first time the two plays were published together. This copy is from the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), who spent decades as the film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express. His various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981). His ownership note is on the front wrapper verso, dated September 1987. Octavo. Original wrappers, lettered in black. Light creasing to slightly rubbed wrappers, contents lightly toned: a very good copy.
