Art / Print / Poster First Edition
First edition, 4to (262 x 210 mm), [viii], [2], 157, [1]pp., inserted leaf after the final contents leaf "The author to the reader: Postscript", 63 engraved plates, old damp staining to upper portion of text leaves and plates, light in places but noticeable (see photos), nineteenth century half calf, patterned paper boards, morocco spine labels lettered in gilt. The first work in English on Bridge-Building. George Semple (c.1700-1782) was an prominent Dublin architect, after he had undertaken the timber repairs to one of the stone piers of the late seventeenth-century Essex Bridge over the River Liffey, he was commissioned by the Dublin Corporation over the building of a new replacement bridge. This account of the building of that new bridge shows Semple's particular interest in exploring the latest technology of 'enclosures' when constructing in deep water, to enable the removal of old foundations and replacement with new. Semple's prime intention in issuing this book was to enable young, inexperienced builders to make themselves masters of bridge building without the difficulties that he had encountered.
