Add to basketLondon, Rupert Hart-Davis, [1955]. 8vo. Original boards with illustrated dust-wrappers (not price-clipped); pp. 224, sketch map and plates after photographs; very light rubbing to the rarely seen wrappers, minimal offsetting from endpapers, otherwise remarkably clean and fresh. First edition in English (and not the Travel Book Club edition) of a classic tale of survival by an unheralded but important figure in the history of Arctic exploration. 'In 1910 he [Mikkelsen] decided to search for the diaries of the ill-fated Mylius-Erichsen expedition, which had set out to prove that Robert PearyÂ's outline of the East Greenland coast was a myth, erroneous and presumably self-serving. Iver Iversen was a mechanic who joined Mikkelsen in Iceland when the expeditionÂ's boat needed repair. Several months later, Mikkelsen and Iversen embarked on a journey during which they would suffer virtually every travail in the Arctic repertoire: implacable cold, scurvy, starvation, frostbite, snow blindness, plunges into icy seawater, Sisyphean sledging conditions, Vitamin A poisoning, debilitated dogs, apocalyptic storms, gaping crevasses, and assorted mortifications of the flesh. MikkelsenÂ's diary was eaten by a bear. Three years of this, coupled with seemingly no hope of rescue, would drive most crazy, yet the two retained both their sanity and their humor. Indeed, what may have saved them was their refusal to become as desolate as their surroundings' (blurb of the first US edition of 2003).

Add to basketFirst editions, first impressions, of Danish explorer Ejnar Mikkelsen's autobiographical travel narratives, each volume warmly inscribed by the author to the Danish book dealer Johannes Schou; signed copies are notably scarce in commerce. Mikkelsen (1880-1971) "was largely responsible for exploring the east coast of Greenland. [He] also founded the Inuit colony of Scoresby Sound and led an expedition to search for land reported north of Alaska" (Mills, p. 426). Additionally, Mikkelsen is famed for his enforced wintering for two years in north-east Greenland. Farlig Tomandsfrd is the account of the Alabama expedition, which was Mikkelsen's journey to recover the lost journals and maps of the Denmark Expedition (1906-8), led by Ludwig Mylius-Erichsen, which surveyed north-east Greenland. It had originally set out to disprove the claims of Robert E. Peary, who in 1891 outlined the eastern coast of Greenland and mapped a channel separating what he believed to be an island from the mainland, something that would have allowed America to make a land claim. Mikkelsen's party of six men made winter quarters at Dove Bay, Shannon Island. In the autumn of 1909, Mikkelsen and the mechanic Iver P. Iversen took their first sledging excursion, penetrating as far as Lamberts Land in search of the Mylius-Erichsen documents. "Crossing the Greenland ice cap, the two men eventually arrived at Danmark Fjord, where Mylius-Erichsen's documents were discovered inside a cairn. After a harrowing journey back, during which Mikkelsen and Iversen suffered every conceivable hardship, the two explorers arrived at Dove Bay on 25.11.10. There they discovered that not only had their ship been crushed by ice but also that the remaining members of the expedition, who had given up Mikkelsen and Iversen for dead, had gone home on a passing sealing-vessel. Fortunately, before departing, they had erected a cabin and left a stock of food. In the event, Mikkelsen and Iversen were forced to endure another two winters on the Greenland coast, suffering great hardships, until rescued by a Norwegian sealer. By then, nearly all hope of seeing them again had been abandoned" (Howgego). The two men spent two winters in the cottage, before being rescued. During their stay, Mikkelsen got ill with scurvy, describing his perils and their effects on Iversen thus: "However, Ivar knew very well, what my sickness and its course would mean for him: the heaviest of all that can be laid on the shoulder of a man a complete paralyzing fear of loneliness" (p. 94). The ordeal was first told in the work Lost in the Arctic (1913), and made into the film Against the Ice in 2022. Fra Hundevagt til Hundeslde contains the memoirs of Mikkelsen's youth. Ukendt Mand til ukendt Land was later translated into English, as Mirage in the Arctic. It is a narrative of the Anglo-American Polar Expedition (1906-8), which proved that contrary to long-held belief, there was no land north of Alaska. Fra Fribytter til Embedsmand is mainly concerned with the legal status of Eastern Greenland. Svundne Tider is the fifth and last volume covering the author's time as inspector of east Greenland in 1933-9 and 1945-50. This excellent set is inscribed to Johannes Schou (1890-1965), owner of Anton Antonsen Boghandel in Charlottenlund, Denmark: "med tak for mange aars hjaelpsomhed of venskab" ("with thanks for many years of help and friendship") and "med tak for mange aars venskabeligt samarbejde" ("with thanks for many years of friendly collaboration"). Howgego M39. William James Mills, Exploring Polar Frontiers, 2003. Five works, octavo (205 x 53 mm.). With a total of 41 half-tone photographic plates. Uniformly bound in contemporary reddish brown half morocco, compartments decorated and lettered in gilt, raised bands, marbled boards, light brown textured endpapers, speckled edges, original wrappers bound in and 6 dust jacket front flaps loosely laid in (4 from Fra Hundevagt til Hundeslde). A few small flaws to morocco, text leaves slightly shaved, original wrappers lightly creased and trimmed, one with repair to verso, occasional minor finger soiling. A very good set, bright and square.
