"Thomas Randall" was the author's pseudonym who wished to remain anonymous in accordance w/the Alcoholics Anonymous tradition. Although Randall apparently died in 1958, Scribner's continues to respect his anonymity. This was Thomas Randall's first and only novel and is unique in the field of fiction where all the major characters suffer under the common bond of alcoholism. This bond brings them together at a hospital for alcoholics, and the author presents the dramatic effects of the interrelationships developing from their meeting. It is the powerful story of men and women forced to examine their own minds and souls for the true motivation behind their actions. The story of their attempts to help themselves and others, the struggle to establish new ideals and standards in place of weakened foundations from which their lives have stood. Randall was in a unique position to write with accuracy about his subject; but more important, he writes with a clear, purposeful style seldom found in a first novel. The characters stand out vividly and individually, although each one comes to realize his dependence on the others. Throughout, the strength and simplicity of AA is expressed.
