First published in the U.S. as THE TABLE TALKS in a newspaper seri…al form, and then as a complete novel as TURN OF THE TABLE in 1940 by Doubleday. The fourth mystery novel set in the U.S. fictionalized Eastern rural town Kenmore, featuring poor country doctor and widower, Hugh Westlake, who sleuths outs murderers with the aid of his daughter Dawn, much to the chagrin of the stooge, and always somewhat baffled police Inspector Cobb. Highly regarded mystery writing team that created the character Peter Duluth, most notably THE BLACK WIDOW, adapted to the 1954 Noir film starring Ginger Rogers, Van Heflin, Gene Tierney, and George Raft. They also co-wrote as Patrick Quentin, and Q. Patrick, sometimes with other co-writers. Scarce. Mild surface stains to the covers, rubbing to the upper and lower spine edges and corner tips, a very small cream stain dot to the spine, short tear to the upper spine end at the rear spine fold, some light-tan spots to the pages, minor border stains, a small surface abrasion and white paper remnant to the front end-papers, some border stains to the rear end-paper, pale stain drops to the upper page edges, else good and sound in black linen with silver embossed titles to the spine; lacking a dust jacket.
