Hardback. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1969. First edition. 205pp. Nicolas Freeling (1927-2003), was a British crime novelist, best known as the author of the van der Valk series of detective novels. In this novel, when Esther Marx is found savagely murdered, mown down by machine-gun fire in her lacklustre apartment, the trail leads to the wide, shallow valley of Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam, 1954. Van der Valk investigates. The book is bound in the original purple boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in very good plus condition with a touch of fading at the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with the letter 'j' lightly written on the front fixed endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper (design by Bentley/Farrell/Burnett) has light shelf wear and the spine is slightly faded with light bumping to the spine ends. There is a small bit of chipping to the laminate covering on the top corner and spine ends and about 1/4" of the laminate covering is missing from the bottom front spine corner. A tear of about 1/4" and a nick on the bottom front spine corner have been repaired on the reverse with tape.
