Half-leather binding. Leather spine with a yellow-orange plate with golden writing on it. Engraved with a golden flower design. Title with an engraved vignette. The spine is worn out and there is a defect on the bottom part of the leather. The pages are slightly brown spotted. There are a few ink remarks on pages: XVI, 21, 51 and 83. The book is thoroughly readable and usable. Furthermore the covers of this rare first edition are in astonishing good condition. The book is generally in a good condition for it's age. No smoke smell. D'Alembert was one of the most popular representatives of the French age of enlightenment and a prominent natural scientist of his time. His principles described in this book are still used today. But in a trivialized manner and not as carefully worded as in this original text. Sprache: Französisch.

Its statement that "the internal forces of inertia must be equal and opposite to the forces that produce the acceleration" is still known as "d'Alembert's Principle". This principle is applied to many phenomena and, in particular, to the theory of the motion of fluids. It has become useful in the practical solution of many technical and mechanical problems, and is as important for the motion of bodies as is the principle of virtual velocities for their equilibrium - the latter formulated by Johann Bernoulli in 1717". D'Alembert first treatise had been devoted to the study of rigid bodies ; now he was giving attention to the other class of matter, the fluids. He was actually giving an alternative treatment to one already published by Daniel Bernouilli, and he commented that both he and Bernouilli usually arrived at the same conclusions. He felt that his own method was superior. The present work applies D'Alembert principle to fluids".
