Hardcover. 1st Edition. A handsome copy bound in finely woven blue cloth stamped brightly in gilt on the spine. While there is some light flecking to a few letters, the title, author, and publisher are bright and readable. Printed on very white paper of heavy stock, the book is clean and tight throughout and illustrated profusely with 57 photos, including full-page plates of Clark Gable and Buck, and Loretta Young and Buck from "The Call of the Wild." A delightful book in splendid condition. Carl Spitz (August 26, 1894 September 15, 1976) was a Hollywood dog trainer, most famous for owning and training Toto, the dog from the movie The Wizard of Oz. Toto was played by Spitz's own Cairn Terrier named Terry. Spitz developed the method of using silent hand signals to direct an animal. Spitz was a German immigrant and student of Col. Konrad Most, who was widely considered to be "The Father of Dog Training in America". Carl opened the Hollywood Dog Training School in California in 1927. Carl Spitz would later go on to become the man responsible for setting up America's WWII War-Dog Program. He was buried in Glendale's Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
