Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Second Printing. 156 Pages Indexed. Three inked lines gift inscription on front endpaper. No other markings noted. Interior text and illustration pages are bright, tight, and white. Tracking Ghost Railroads in Colorado is a complete field guide for those who enjoy exploring old railroad grades. The routes are on 71 color maps. Over 160 "then and now" photographs 5 in full color. The maps are related to modern roads and jeep trails so the reader can use them to find and follow the grades. They also show such things as the gauge, the year of construction, abandonment, and name changes that took place owing to reorganization. The script includes guide information, brief historical summaries and a few other facts of interest. Explorations began in 1954 with a motor trip through the San Juan, mainly along the Rio Grande Southern, and ended in 1973 with a large but little known lumber railroad known as the Colorado & Southwestern. The trip covered all of Colorado, crossed slightly into Wyoming and Utah, and into northern New Mexico. Some of the information is taken from an earlier book Railroads and the Rockies and is long since out of print. Coverage includes some live railroads, mainly of special scenic interest. Recommended trips include the following as starters: Live railroads: The Silverton Branch and the Toltec Scenic Railroad - both all day rides behind narrow gauge steam locomotives. Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railroad, Mount Manitou Incline cable, and Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Grades converted to road without changing character. Also Boreas Pass and the approaches to Alpine Tunnel of the Denver South Park & Pacific, the Argentine Central Trout Lake to Lizard Head Pass on the Rio Grande Southern and any combination of the Cripple Creek lines. Walking trips are many and varied, and most of them have some surprise or other. The Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden has a large sampling of retired rolling stock and many smaller items of interest. The first part of the collection there came in 1959 from an earlier museum south of Alamosa. Contents in Six Chapters: The Prairies, South Central Colorado, Denver West, Colorado Springs and West, Southwest, and Additions and Corrections.
