Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Tom Swift is the main character of five series of American juvenile science fiction and adventure novels that emphasize science, invention and technology. First published in 1910, the series total more than 100 volumes. The character was created by Edward Stratemeyer, the founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, a book-packaging firm. Tom's adventures have been written by various ghostwriters, beginning with Howard Garis. Most of the books are credited to the collective pseudonym "Victor Appleton". The 33 volumes of the second series use the pseudonym Victor Appleton II for the author. For this series, and some of the later series, the main character is "Tom Swift, Jr." New titles have been published as recently as 2007. Most of the various series emphasized Tom's inventions. The books generally describe the effects of science and technology as wholly beneficial, and the role of the inventor in society as admirable and heroic. Translated into many languages, the books have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Tom Swift has also been the subject of a board game and a television series. Several famous people, including Steve Wozniak and Isaac Asimov, have cited "Tom Swift" as an inspiration. Several inventions, including the Taser, have been inspired allegedly by Swift's fictional inventions. "TASER" is said to be an acronym for "Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle." Tom Swift and His Great Searchlight by Victor Appleton is part of the Tom Swift series of adventure novels aimed at young readers. In this installment, Tom Swift, the inventive and resourceful young protagonist, embarks on an exciting adventure involving the creation and testing of a powerful new searchlight. The plot revolves around Tom's development of an advanced, high-powered searchlight, which he hopes will be useful for a variety of practical applications, including aiding navigation at sea and aiding in rescue missions. Along the way, Tom faces challenges from rival inventors, technical setbacks, and dangerous situations that put his searchlight to the test. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. This VG- quality likely second format book, as per Mattson & Davis, was copyrighted in 1912 and was published by Grosset & Dunlap; it is 7-5/8" tall with 214 numbered pages of text followed by 6 unnumbered pages of ads. This book has a very slight lean, is very clean, free of edge dings and corner bumps; the head and heel of the spine are bumped with some color loss but no fraying; the bottom edges have a moderate amount of wear but the front corner is rather worn. The spine is clean and not faded or worn; all the lettering is intact and the oval image is nearly pristine. The front panel is very clean with little wear; the lower corner does have some wear and fading (see photo). Except for an inked first name only on the FFEP, the interior is free of writing, stray marks, stains of any sort and paper damage of any type. The front hinge is strong and not damaged whereas the rear hinge is slightly loose but still strong. The text paper is mildly toned and very flexible. The book has no remainder mark and is not a former library book. It has a frontis on coated paper. The list at the rear of the book lists to title #25. The jacket is definitely of Poor quality. Besides the huge chunk that takes out the top 3-1/2 inches of the spine and part of the front panel and the smaller chip at the base of the spine that takes out some of the bottom of the front panel, there are water stains down the front and rear folds as well as down the spine--the book does not have any corresponding water stains. 31 Tom Swift titles are listed on front flap.
