Contemporary full calf leather; boards scuffed with some staining; board corners worn particularly at front board's lower fore-edge; spine scuffed with surface chip near heel; spine center has slender gouges; spine's title label muted to a dull brown with gilt stamping dulled but legible. Missing front free endpaper and title leaf but pagination matches that of the 1805 Philadelphia Classic Press-William Poyntell edition which, per OCLC, seems to be unique to this imprint. Moisture staining to initial and rear leaves with some foxing/toning throughout. Illegible antiquarian ink signature at top of front pastedown at top of half-title. Two antiquarian inscriptions also on front pastedown: "Th. Brownrigg's | Book bought [?] Henry | Wills 1811" followed by "Richd. T Brownrigg | 1818." Near top of page v (Preface) is inscription: "Thomas 1811 Brownrigg | his book bought [of?] Henry Wills." With a frontispiece b/w portrait of Sir William Jones and the concluding rear plate being a facsimile of Jones' handwriting. Binding is firm. A bit of a marginalized copy per the missing title leaf but nonetheless still a book with intriguing North Carolina and Columbus, Mississippi provenances. Henry Wills (1764-1827) was one of the earliest printers in North Carolina, first in New Bern (late 1787-early1788) and then in Edenton (starting in summer 1788). joining Abraham Hodge in publishing a weekly newspaper, the State Gazette of North Carolina. Hodge and Wills were sanctioned as North Carolina's state printers from 1788 to 1797 despite the dissolution of their newspaper partnership in March 1793 and they are also known to have started selling books from their office starting as early as 1788. Wills retired as a printer in 1797 but ran a general store with books as a primary product line through at least 1819. The Brownrigg family established American roots circa 1760 when Richard Brownrigg (1735-1771) settled in North Carolina upon immigrating from Ireland and his son, Thomas J. Brownrigg (1767-1826), owned the Wingfield estate near Edenton in Chowan County, North Carolina. In turn, his son was General Richard Thomas Brownrigg (1793-1847) who settled in Columbus, Mississippi in 1835 establishing a 2000 acre cotton plantation and constructing a manor house, Temple Heights, which still stands today. The Brownrigg Family Papers are held by the University of North Carolina.…

BOOK RESUME: The Right Method for a Settled Peace of Conscience and Spiritual Comfort is a masterpiece of Casmistry or spiritual counselling, specifically designed to assist those struggling with religious melancholy and the distempers of the soul. Written in the form of thirty-two distinct directions, Baxter provides a systematic psychological and theological framework for distinguishing between true spiritual conviction and mere emotional distress. The text emphasizes that a settled peace is found not in momentary feelings, but in the rational and scriptural assurance of ones relationship with God. This edition, though commencing at signature A5, contains the core of Baxters influential advice on self-examination, the dangers of over-scrupulosity, and the practical application of the Gospel to a troubled mind. AUTHOR: Richard Baxter (1615-1691) was a titan of English Puritanism and one of the most prolific and influential Nonconformist theologians of the 17th century. A self-taught scholar of immense intellect, he served as a chaplain in the Parliamentary army during the English Civil War before settling as a minister in Kidderminster, where his transformative 'reformed pastorate' became a model for Protestant ministry. Baxter was a man of the 'Middle Way', frequently seeking to mediate between the warring factions of Episcopacy, Presbyterianism, and Independency, though his refusal to conform to the Act of Uniformity in 1662 led to years of persecution and imprisonment. His literary output, exceeding 150 works including The Saints' Everlasting Rest, remains a cornerstone of practical divinity, characterized by a deep psychological understanding of the human condition.…
