Contact seller4-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 226 pages. Hardcover: H 27.25cm x L 20.25cm. Black boards; front board minimally decorated with raised lettering within respective bands of dulled gilt; slight scuffing at spine ends. Brown stain at lower fore-edge fractionally affecting several leaves at their margins; pervasive mild rippling and light toning to interior leaves from past moisture exposure but with minimal occurrences of any obtrusive tidelines. A good copy. With olive endpapers and b/w photographs throughout. Campus photos on pages 21-28 and "The Ladies" portrait section on pages 144-152 are uncredited but likely the work of local studio photographer O.N. Pruitt. Student sketch illustrations act as headpieces for the yearbook's major sections for "Seniors," "Junior," "Sophomores," "Freshmen," "Publications," "Organizations," "Clubs," "Athletics," and the concluding fourteen pages of advertisements. The 1927 MEH LADY is Eudora Welty's sophomore yearbook; Miss Welty is pictured on page 132 as a member of the sophomore class with the same headshot duplicated on page 156 for the yearbook staff, page 158 for the Spectator (student newspaper) staff, page 160 for the OH LADY! (literary publication) staff, and page 182 for the Dramatic Club staff. Welty also appears in the cast photograph for the Dramatic Club's presentation of "Icebound" which is reproduced on both pages 183 and 207. Page 219 has a full-page ad for Jackson, Mississippi-based Lamar Life Insurance Company which Eudora's father, Christian Welty, served as President. Welty attended Mississippi State College for Women, now Mississippi University for Women a.k.a. The "W," located in Columbus, Mississippi for her freshman and sophomore years before transferring to University of Wisconsin at Madison. Although Welty did supply drawings for issues of OH LADY!, none of the illustrations on the 1927 MEH LADY bear her initials. Neither the 1926 nor 1927 yearbooks are cited in Noel Polk's EUDORA WELTY; A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HER WORK. Semi-rigid brown covers lightly rubbed; slender scuffing at covers' edges; vertical furrows to spine with ends frayed. Light foxing/toning to text block edges with several small stains to top edge as well; past owner's three-line ink inscription on front free endpaper; varied foxing to interior leaves with slight toning at margins and some soiling; title page has three-line handwritten ink note regarding owner's presence among pharmacy students (student's picture being on page 97); small ink scribble and smudge on page 11 of rear advertising section; red wax pencil scribble on rear free endpaper. Usual stress points to binding with several quires/leaves slightly pulled as is typical for contemporary college annuals due to the heavy stock paper overly burdening the minimal stitching. Still a good copy. B/w photographs and illustrations throughout with a concluding 15 page advertising section. French Club roster on page 188 features an unsigned William Faulkner b/w sketch illustration with humorous French caption picturing a man and woman leaning against the guardrails of the ship R.F. Richelieu. The first Ole Miss yearbook was issued for the 1896-1897 academic year nearly a half-century after the school's founding in 1848. Semi-rigid black covers lightly rubbed; mild scuffing at spine ends and at tips of board corners; front board's gilt stamping remains bright. Foxing and soiling to edges. Marbled-pattern endpapers; ink signature "Emy Louise Price" at top of front free endpaper (with student Emy Lou Price on page 52's Sophomore Class Roll and page 106's yearbook Editorial Staff); frequent light toning at page margins throughout; occasional light soiling and foxing to interior pages too; first several leaves with short tears at their lower fore-edge margins. Text block sags significantly at center but lessens towards yearbook's front and rear as the quires are pulling away from the spine's inner cloth backstrip which is often the case with college annuals of this era due to the heavy stock paper overly burdening the minimal stitching at the inner endbands; although the printer/binder reinforced the front and rear hinges, the binding is shaken between pages 128-129 and 144-145 and has multiple lesser stress points causing various quires (mostly at front and rear) to be pulled. Still a fair copy with much better exterior cosmetics than what is usually encountered. B/w photographs and illustrations throughout with a concluding 19 page advertising section. Of all the William Faulkner-related Ole Miss yearbooks the 1920 annual is the most significant as Faulkner contributed five b/w illustrations (reproduced from original pen-and-ink drawings), an original poem, and appears in two photographs all as follows: {#1} page 29 - unsigned illustration (but in Faulkner's unmistakable style) of four men as headpiece for Classes Section; {#2} page 105 - signed illustration of wind-blown man and woman as headpiece for Organizations Section; {#3} page 107 - Faulkner at bottom right corner of Ole Miss Staff photo; {#4} page 145 - "Members of A.E.F. Club" page has small signed illustration of a women and man, the latter in a military uniform, captioned with a joke in French; {#5} page 146 - Faulkner at left side of American Legion group photo; {#6} page 155 - signed illustration of a dancing man and woman beside a bowing guitarist in foreground with candelabras in background all as a headpiece for Social Activities Section; {#7} page 157 - small signed illustration of dancing man and woman for Red and Blue Club page; and {#8} page 174 - signed two-stanza, fourteen-line poem titled "To a Co-ed" (expressing influences drawn from Algernon Swinburne, A.E. Housman, John Keats, and the Elizabethans). The first Ole Miss yearbook was issued for the 1896-1897 academic year nearly a half-century after the school's founding in 1848.
