USA Today Bestseller Timed for the 250th anniversary of America's revolution and founding: Paul Revere's heroic ride, newly told with fresh research into little-known aspects of the story Americans have heard since childhood but hardly understood On April 18, 1775, a Boston-based silversmith, engraver, and anti-British political operative named Paul Revere set out on a borrowed horse to fulfill a dangerous but crucial mission: to alert American colonists of advancing British troops, which would seek to crush their nascent revolt. Revere was not the only rider that night, and indeed, he had completed at least 18 previous rides across New England and other colonies, disseminating intelligence about British movements. But this ride was like no other, and its consequences in the months and years to come?as the American Revolution morphed from isolated skirmishes to a full-fledged war?became one of our founding legends. In The Ride, Kostya Kennedy presents a dramatic new narrative of the events of April 18 and 19, 1775, informed by fresh primary and secondary source research into archives, family letters and diaries, contemporary accounts, and more. Kennedy reveals Revere's ride to be more complex than it is usually portrayed?a loosely coordinated series of rides by numerous men, near-disaster, capture by British forces, and finally success. While Revere was central to the ride and its plotting, Kennedy reveals the other men (and, perhaps, a woman with information about the movement of British forces) who helped to set in motion the events that would lead to America's independence. Thrillingly written in a dramatic, unstoppable narrative, The Ride re-tells an essential American story for a new generation of readers. Signed by Author(s).

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. First published in 1934, this "improved" Coronation Year Edition was issued in June 1953 in response to growing interest in the sport, notably thanks to coverage in the Daily Mirror and Picture Post (pp3-4). Original staple-bound colour illustrated wraps 12x19cm. 36pp including b/w photos and local adverts. Printed by A. Wheaton & Co., Exeter. Very good, tanning, with some creasing, staples rusting. Ronald Funnell (1894-1971) ran the Cornish Bookshop in Newquay at this time, and had written a published a couple of other local guides. This work first appeared when surfing was taking off, having apparently been imported by Australian soldiers during WW1 (ref: Andy Funnell, Spencer's Wood: Ronald Spencer Funnell, Surfing Pioneer on the Cornish Coast). This second edition includes practical advice on board type, confidence, hold and control, choice of breaker, take-off, best times, and a few don'ts. There is also a list of all suitable beaches in England, cautions to bathers, and warnings re Spring tides. Photos credited to the author, Daily Mirror and Raymond Smith show surfers in action, and some striking locations. Adverts are for local equipment suppliers Westlake's (for curved ash or chestnut boards, and agents for the new Solarbo Balsa Boards which are pictured), shops, tours, hotel, and dancing at the Blue Lagoon. Very rare, with Worldcat and Jisc recording only 4 locations (BL, National Library of Scotland, Trinity College Dublin, University of Oxford). A shorter revised edition appeared c1955/6.
