Time and the Hour by Howard Spring is a substantial family and social drama that explores themes of identity, legitimacy, morality, love, and political upheaval in the years leading up to the Second World War. Set largely in Yorkshire, around the Bradford a…rea, the novel follows the consequences of a long-hidden family secret as a young man discovers the truth about his parentage. Against this personal story Spring weaves a broader picture of British society during the inter-war years, including the rise of fascism in Europe, the plight of refugees, journalism, and the growing shadow of war. Characteristically for Spring, the novel combines strong storytelling with an examination of how historical events affect ordinary lives. The title is taken from a line in Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Add to basketCondition: Used. In the grand continuum of literary masterpieces, *Time and the Hour* by Howard Spring stands as an enigma wrapped in a mystery, imbibed with a generous splash of existential bewilderment. Published in 1962 by the ever-reliable Fontana Books, this tome offers readers an exquisite exploration of time?not just in t…erms of ticking clocks and the slow march of age, but rather as a tapestry woven with the threads of human experience, loss, and the occasional cuppa. Perhaps, as you flip through its slightly yellowed pages, you may wonder if Spring was attempting to crack the riddle of time itself or merely passing the hours in a smoky café, scribbling down his musings on napkins. Our protagonist?as elusive as a memory slipping through one?s fingers?navigates the labyrinth of life?s temporal quirks. Every turn brings a new revelation, or perhaps a bewildering question that may make you ponder your own existence, preferably over a cup of tea. The narrative dances through the years with all the grace of a three-legged pigeon, leaving readers both amused and perplexed. It?s a novel that teeters on the brink of profundity and absurdity, often stumbling but somehow achieving a kind of chaotic charm along the way. In the tradition of the finest British literature, Spring invites you to ponder such profound concepts as: Is time merely a social construct? Or are we all just unwitting participants in a cosmic joke? And why, pray tell, is the hour hand so much less interesting than the minute hand? These questions will linger like the smell of toast from an afternoon tearoom, tantalising yet ultimately unanswered. If you ever wanted to contemplate your own mortality while considering the merits of a good biscuit, look no further. As you delve into this peculiar literary venture, you might find yourself pondering the following compelling questions: What does time mean to a clockmaker who?s lost his sense of time? Can a narrative truly capture the essence of something as slippery as an hour? Is there an optimal time for reading this book, or does it depend on the reader?s mood? How many cups of tea does it take to fully appreciate Spring?s intricate musings? Will this book make me profoundly philosophical, or just slightly confused? The year 1962 was a time of great change, yet somehow this book feels like a curious relic from an era that may have existed only in a parallel universe where everyone wore hats and had existential crises over tea. Flipping through these pages might transport you back to a time when life felt a touch more whimsical, with the prospect of the future draped in a veil of uncertainty and hope, albeit with a distinct lack of mobile phones to distract from the fleeting moments. Condition: This particular copy of *Time and the Hour* has been lovingly used, bearing the marks of its previous owners with the grace of a well-traveled companion. Expect dog-eared corners, the faint smell of nostalgia mingling with the scent of aged paper, and the occasional coffee stain that adds character?much like the characters within its pages. The spine is creased, making it look well-loved, yet its wisdom remains intact, a testament to the timeless nature of Spring?s reflections. So as you contemplate your choices, consider this: perhaps *Time and the Hour* is precisely the book you need for a rainy afternoon?or perhaps it?s the book you never knew you didn?t want to read. Either way, it?s available at Crappy Old Books, where one man?s outdated literature is another man?s philosophical adventure! Pick it up and see where the hour takes you?hopefully, it?s not too far from the kettle.
