Paperback. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). Three very scarce programs for Gilbert and Sullivan productions at the Opera Comique. Three very scarce programs for Gilbert and Sullivan shows performed at the Opera Comique. The Opera Comique was a theatre in Westminster, located between Wych Street, Holywell Street and the Strand. Opened in 1870, the theatre continued productions until its demolition in 1902. The theatre is remembered today for holding several early Gilbert and Sullivan operas for the first time, including the two operas for which these programs are for.Two programs for 'Pirates of Penzance', first performed in London on the 3rd April 1880. This is a comic opera following the 21 year old Frederic, who is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. The play ran for 363 performances at the Opera Comique. These two programs show changes in cast. One program for 'Patience', first performed on the 23rd April 1881. This is a comic opera in two acts, and is a satire on the aesthetic movements of the 1870s and 80s. Once this play moved to the Savoy in 1881, it became the first theatrical production in the world to be lit entirely by electric lights. This was the sixth operatic collaboration of Gilbert and Sullivan, and ran for 578 performances. Unbound as issued. Externally, generally smart, with light handling marks and age-toning, heavier to 'Patience'. Small tears to the head and tail of the spines, and a touch of edge wear to the wraps. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the occasional handling mark. Very Good. book.
