Situated between 1625 and 1628, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard. He befriends the three most formidable musketeers of the age - Athos, Porthos and Aramis, "the three inseparables", as these are called - and gets involved in affairs of the state and court. In genre, The Three Musketeers is primarily a historical and adventure novel. However, Dumas also frequently works into the plot various injustices, abuses, and absurdities of the old regime, giving the novel an additional political aspect at a time when the debate in France between republicans and monarchists was still fierce. Edition de Louvre limited to 1,000 sets of which this is number 842. Rare and collectible. Dark blue cloth, paper label on spine, top edge gilt. No stated publishing history so presumed first edition, first printing thus. This is a used book. Pages are clean and bright with no markings, notes, or highlighting. No owner's marks or bookplates, not ex-library. Price written on front endpaper. Binding is tight and square with no fading on boards. Corners lightly bumped. Minor edge wear at tops and bottoms of boards and spine. An excellent reading copy.

Mild damp staining thereafter, scattered light foxing. A very early American publication of this title. One of a series of Dumas' works published by T.B. Peterson at the original price of one dollar.
