Others offer practical advice about gardening, business or repairing household appliances. The Thread of Gold does none of these things. Instead, Arthur Christopher Benson invites readers to sit quietly for a while and think about life. Published in 1912, just before the world was about to experience upheavals on a scale Benson could scarcely have imagined, this reflective and deeply personal work explores happiness, purpose, character and the curious business of being human. It belongs to that wonderfully Edwardian literary tradition in which thoughtful gentlemen sat down and attempted to make sense of existence using little more than intelligence, experience and an excellent command of the English language. Benson was exceptionally qualified for the task. Son of an Archbishop of Canterbury, brother of the novelist E.F. Benson and author of the lyrics to Land of Hope and Glory , he inhabited a world of scholarship, privilege and introspection. Fortunately for readers, he also possessed the rare ability to turn his thoughts into prose that remains engaging more than a century later. The title itself hints at the book?s central idea.
