Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Thinking as a Science by Henry Hazlitt is a timeless guide to the art and discipline of critical thinking, offering readers practical tools to sharpen logic and enhance intellectual development. Written in clear and accessible prose, this classic non-fiction work explores the habits and methods that underlie effective reasoning, encouraging readers to approach thought as a skill that can be cultivated and refined. Hazlitt begins by dissecting common obstacles to sound reasoning, such as prejudice, confusion, and intellectual laziness. He then presents a systematic approach to improving mental discipline, emphasizing the importance of clarity, precision, and objectivity in every aspect of thought. Drawing on examples from philosophy, science, and everyday life, Hazlitt demonstrates how anyone can apply logical principles to solve problems, make better decisions, and avoid common pitfalls in argumentation. The book delves into the value of skepticism and open-mindedness, urging readers to question assumptions and seek evidence before forming conclusions. Hazlitt also addresses the role of reading, study, and conversation in expanding one's intellectual horizons, providing practical advice for lifelong self-improvement. Throughout, his tone remains encouraging and pragmatic, making complex ideas accessible to both students and general readers. Thinking as a Science stands out for its blend of theoretical insight and actionable guidance, making it an essential resource for anyone seeking to master the art of reasoning. Whether you are a student, professional, or lifelong learner, this book offers a roadmap to intellectual growth and mental clarity, reinforcing the enduring value of critical thinking in every area of life. Solid, rare first edition from collection of an historical college. Trinity of Vermont was a college in Burlington. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy of Vermont as New England's second ever Catholic women's college, Trinity was a pioneer in education and service. It closed due to finances after which the University of Vermont acquired its campus. Mr. Hazlitt, journalist, literary critic, economist, philosopher, was one of the most brilliant intellectuals of the twentieth century. He was a journalist for the New York Sun, The Nation, the New York Times, and Newsweek and is credited with popularizing Austrian economics among English readers. Contents: "I. The Neglect of Thinking; II. Thinking with Method; III. A Few Cautions; IV. Concentration; V. Prejudice and Uncertainty; VI. Debate and Conversation; VII. Thinking and Reading; VIII. Writing One's Thoughts; IX. Things Worth Thinking About; X. Thinking as an Art; XI. Books on Thinking." In his early twenties while working at the Wall Street Journal as a stenographer, Hazlitt had already completed this first book Thinking as a Science. In this volume, Hazlitt challenges the idea that sound creative thought is a result of reading others' works. Hazlitt argues the opposite, and that if the object is to enhance one's own thinking, one should read less. Read less and focus on the practice of thinking as a science, thereby articulating one's thoughts. Only read when it's absolutely beneficial to enhance and expand one's independent thinking. 251 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.

This evil is the neglect of thinking. And when I say thinking I mean real thinking, independent thinking, hard thinking. Most people, when confronted with a problem, immediately acquire an inordinate desire to 'read-up' on it. Did it ever occur to you that you had within you the power to occupy your mind, and do it more profitably than all those assiduous readers? Briefly, did it ever occur to you to think?" - page 2. "Henry Hazlitt (1894 - 1993) was one of the great free-market advocates of the 20th century. He introduced millions to the ideas of liberty through his classic book 'Economics in One Lesson' and his estimated 10,000 reviews, articles, and essays in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Newsweek." - The Henry Hazlitt Foundation. Fifth printing of the 1916 first edition. [6], 251 pp. Front free endpaper removed. Unmarked with somewhat above-average wear to original red cloth. No dust jacket, if one was issued. A worthy early reading copy of this incisive work.; 12mo.
