From the author's preface: "The purpose of this book is to give the theory of Mathieu functions and to demonstrate its application to representative problems in physics and engineering science. It has been written for the technologist, and is not addressed in any sense to the pure mathematician." [The author then goes on to request that any criticism from mathematicians concerning the methods of technologists "should be entirely of a constructive and helpful nature."
