Red leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title Observer & World. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper and inscriptions on front free endpaper and back fixed endpaper indicating that this book was given to the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College in 1828 by James R. Irvin of Carlisle and John F. Hoff of Lancaster. The collection of essays by English playwright Richard Cumberland (1732-1811) was originally issued in one volume containing 40 numbers in 1785; it was augmented in successive editions. This edition contains 152 essays. The World was originally published in 1753-56 with Adam Fitz-Adam (pseudonym of Edward Moore), the Earl of Chesterfield, Richard Owen Cambridge, and Horace Walpole as the principal contributors; this contains all 209 issues and "A World Extraordinary," unnumbered and undated. In Very Good- Condition: leather is rubbed and scraped; 2x7-cm. section lacking along gutter of last leaf of The Observer, with small loss of text; occasional light foxing; otherwise clean.

Very attractive example of this full bound-up run of Edward Moore's weekly periodical in handsome period binding with original collective title-pages added to each volume. Contributors include Horace Walpole, Soame Jenyns and John Boyle Earl of Orrery, and with Chesterfield's articles of late 1754 extolling Johnson's imminent Dictionary on the eve of its publication, ESTC P1858, citing 14 examples in the UK (5 of which at British Library and 4 at Cambridge) and 8 example in US (3 of which at University of Virginia).

Complete in four volumes.Each volume is bound with the half-title.A collection of the weekly newspaper, 'The World', which was published from 1753 to 1756, with a total of two-hundred and nine publications.The newspaper saw contributions from people such as Horace Walpole, E. S. Dallas, Edward Lovibond, and Charles Hanbury Williams. It was devoted to the satirising the follies and vices of the fashionable society of the eighteenth century.The publication typically saw a circulation that averaged from two to three thousand copies.Edited by Edward Moore, under the pseudonym 'Adam Fitz-Adam'. He became the editor through the influence of Lord Lyttelton. Moore was a dramatist who wrote 'The Foundling', 'Gil Blas', 'Fables From the Female Sex', and more. In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. A little loss to the head and tail of the spines. Minor bumping to the extremities. Rubbing to the rear board of Volume I. Front hinge of Volume I is starting but firm. Hinges of Volume IV are starting but firm. Volume IV is lacking the endpapers. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, and to the verso to the rear endpaper of Volume I. Ink mark to the rear pastedown of Volumes II and IV. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned with the occasional mark. Very Good. book.
