Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. A Uk 1st Edition, 1st printing hardback book in its original dust jacket. The very first instalment of the author's legendary Railway Series. This copy is a very rare first edition, 1st printing of this title, with illustrations by William Middleton, and without the advert for 'Thomas the Tank Engine' at the end of the book. No reference to printings internally. The book also has the required mentions of the 'fat director' in the text, rather than the 'fat controller' which was detailed in later copies. The title in green to the front board is 'The Three Railway Engines' and does not show an illustration of the trains. - The book itself is in good condition overall with the boards and spine still firmly attached to the page block. The book seems to have a slight lean at the spine, and the spine also has some very light nicks to the cloth at the top and bottom. Very light nicks to the outside corners of the boards, with some spots of staining to the boards. Internally, the book is in a lovely condition with no tears or inscriptions present. There are the remnants of a very small purple stamp to the bottom right of the rear pastedown (size of 1.5cm by 1cm), and this is covered by the dust jacket. Some light foxing and creasing to the end papers but otherwise a pleasing copy. - The dust jacket is in fair condition and has not had its price clipped with a price of 4/- Net shown. Reverse has a round black and white illustration of a waterfall, with 'A Lyn Book' printed underneath. The jacket has a 5.5cm x 1.1cm triangular area of loss to the front and two 1cm open tears to the bottom of the reverse. The spine cover has some loss to the top and bottom, and a 0.5cm closed tear to the top. Other small closed tears to the top and bottom. General staining across the jacket. A fair copy overall.

Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Middleton, William (illustrator). First edition. 1st 1945. Almost very good condition in a good dustwrapper. The first title in the Railway series. The three engines all lived in the same shed and worked on the same railway. Small oblong format. Cream boards with green title and border to front cover. 62 pages. Colour illustrations. The first printing WITHOUT the advert at the rear of the volume for Thomas the Tank Engine which was published in 1946 and the use of the term fat director which is present on pages 40, 42, 52, 54, 56 and 60. In the 1947 edition and after he was renamed famously The Fat Controller. Covers slightly edge worn, some light foxing to covers. Small split to base of spine. Inscription in ink to front free-endpaper. Stitching slightly pulled causing contents to be a little loose. Some small, light fingermarks to contents.
