Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Shining with the Shiner By John A. Lee. Publisher: Bernard Henry & N. V. Douglas Ltd., 1950. First Edition. Very good hardback with no jacket. No inscriptions, rubbing and bumping to edges, minor marks, light foxing to end-papers and edges, spine is faded, a little chipping to page edges. 192 pages. The real life Shiner Irishman Ned Slattery was immortalised in a series of stories by John A Lee. Once, in New Zealand, most men had tramped the roads, carrying the swag. Indeed, the swagger, with his entire worldly wealth rolled round with a calico tent, fastened with straps and slung from the shoulder, was taken for granted. He was the farmer's labour exchange and, in after years, many men grown eminent in Dominion affairs were, and still are, able to meet and swap yarns about pioneering life on the road, its adventures and hardships, its semi-legendary giants and heroes. "The Shiner", around whom this book is centred, was one of New Zealand's most colourful vagabonds. In his time he tramped the country from end to end. His adventures are told with an authenticity due to the fact that the author spent part of his boyhood on the road and, at one time, tramped for many miles side by side with the Shiner. They make absorbing and, frequently, side-splitting reading. All books are sent free by courier postage within New Zealand. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition, in the scarce original dustwrapper. ***Very good in scarlet cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Lower corner tips slightly creased. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges foxed. Internally also very good with no ownership inscriptions and virtually no creasing to the pages. Whilst the majority of the pages are clean, there is some internal foxing, mainly affecting the first and last few pages, but also some of the pages further in the book (please see scans). ***In a very good original typographical printed dustwrapper, priced at 8s 6d net on the spine. The dustwrapper is remarkably complete, with just some small nicks and rubbing at the extremities, especially at the top and tail of the spine. No serious creases, chips or tears. No fading or browning to the spine colour (please see scans). ***205mm x150mm. 506 pages. ***'In the early years of the Third Republic all Paris was talking, angrily, wistfully, or with contempt, of the affaire Séverin and few figures were larger in the public eye than those of the brilliant but now disgraced young officer, his lovely young wife, his already famous sister who "sent Taine himself into giddy transports by the brightness of her virtuosity". But the leading figures disappeared from Paris, the uproar subsided, Boulanger took the stage and the Séverins were altogether forgotten. Here, with tenderness but not without an inlexion of irony, the author of "The Unforgotten Prisoner" and "One Light Burning" tells what happened to the Séverins and their children.' (Quote taken from the back panel of the dustwrapper) ***'Ray Coryton Hutchinson (23 Jan 1907 - 3 Jul 1975) was a best-selling British novelist. His posthumously published novel "Rising" (1976) was short-listed for the 1976 Booker Prize. His first novel, "Thou Hast a Devil," was published in 1930. It was followed by "The Answering Glory" (1932), and "The Unforgotten Prisoner" (1933), which sold 150,000 copies in the first month. Subsequent novels also sold very well. In March 1940 he joined the army, and in July was posted as captain in the 8th Battalion of the Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment). He travelled widely during the Second World War, while continuing to write. In October 1945, after preparing the official history of the Paiforce campaign, he was demobilised with the rank of major. After the war he wrote many more successful novels, often recommended by book clubs. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in June 1962.' (Wiki) ***First impression of the true first edition of this pre-war novel by R. C. Hutchinson. Very hard to find in the original dustwrapper, especially in such well-preserved condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
