No inscriptions, rubbing and bumping to edges, minor marks, light foxing to end-papers and edges, spine is faded, a little chipping to page edges. 192 pages. The real life Shiner Irishman Ned Slattery was immortalised in a series of stories by John A Lee. Once, in New Zealand, most men had tramped the roads, carrying the swag. Indeed, the swagger, with his entire worldly wealth rolled round with a calico tent, fastened with straps and slung from the shoulder, was taken for granted. He was the farmer's labour exchange and, in after years, many men grown eminent in Dominion affairs were, and still are, able to meet and swap yarns about pioneering life on the road, its adventures and hardships, its semi-legendary giants and heroes. "The Shiner", around whom this book is centred, was one of New Zealand's most colourful vagabonds. In his time he tramped the country from end to end. His adventures are told with an authenticity due to the fact that the author spent part of his boyhood on the road and, at one time, tramped for many miles side by side with the Shiner. Internally also very good with no ownership inscriptions and virtually no creasing to the pages. Whilst the majority of the pages are clean, there is some internal foxing, mainly affecting the first and last few pages, but also some of the pages further in the book (please see scans). ***In a very good original typographical printed dustwrapper, priced at 8s 6d net on the spine. The dustwrapper is remarkably complete, with just some small nicks and rubbing at the extremities, especially at the top and tail of the spine. No serious creases, chips or tears. It was followed by "The Answering Glory" (1932), and "The Unforgotten Prisoner" (1933), which sold 150,000 copies in the first month. Subsequent novels also sold very well. In March 1940 he joined the army, and in July was posted as captain in the 8th Battalion of the Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment). He travelled widely during the Second World War, while continuing to write. In October 1945, after preparing the official history of the Paiforce campaign, he was demobilised with the rank of major. After the war he wrote many more successful novels, often recommended by book clubs. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in June 1962.'
