Otto Muck, an accomplished German scientist, has for the first time related the accounts handed down in the ancient literatures to the facts of geophysical history to explain why Atlantis is so rooted in our collective memory: Atlantis was lost in the greatest trauma of human history. Atlantis was a flourishing island empire in the present~day Azores dominated by the awesome volcano that rose majestically from sea level through the clouds to the sky, the tallest mountain known in the world~the most dramatic symbol of an Atlantean pyramid civilization that stretched from Mesopotamia in the East to the Mayan world in the West. This world was instantaneously shattered when an asteroid several miles in diameter plunged through the earth's crust off the Carolina coast with the unimaginable force of 30,000 hydrogen bombs. The globe wobbled on its axis. The island of Atlantis sank. The Gulf Stream went north. The Ice Age receded. A deluge and a gigantic tidal wave wiped out human, animal and plant life. Gases, steam, mud and debris blacked out the sky, darkening the Northern Hemisphere for 2000 years. The civilization of Atlantis vanished, leaving only fragmented folk memories of a lost Paradise. Muck extrapolates brilliantly from the scientific data to give a terrifying description of the cataclysm. His evidence from geophysical analysis, as well as from Biblical and other ancient sources suggests that the disaster occurred some 11,000 years ago. But Muck does not rest there. In a close examination of the mysteriously detailed Mayan calender (the hitherto unexplained central features of Mayan culture), Muck establishes its astounding purpose: it commemorates the exact moment of the end of Atlantis: 20:00 hours local time on June 5, 8498 B.C.
