Add to basketHardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos (illustrator). 1st. In the preface to his book on New Zealand regimental badges D A Corbett said the need for such a guide had been apparent for many years to collectors of these cap and collar badges. He believed this book contained the majority of badges worn by NZ soldiers, beginning with those of the malitia, volunteer and territorial corps, " the proud forerunners of the NZ Army." In addition to presenting photographs and detailed descriptions of the badges issued to major units of the Army, those for the many associated support sections vital to an army are included. The introductory text areas of the book provide a potted history of the NZ Army's evolution, from the Malitia Act of the mid-1840s, to 1855 when the first formations made up of volunteers were formed in 1858 and over the next 50 years dozens of volunteers units were established on a city, town or district basis, some with only small numbers, in localised situations. The majority being mounted rifles or infantry, with specialist units such as field artillery, engineers etc also established. It was largely these volunteers who provided the troops when a more formalised military structure was set up in 1903 with five military districts established covering the country. The Defence Act of 1911saw the introductiion of a Territorial system based on four military districts. By then, NZs first major overseas military commmittment, the war in South Africa, (1899-1902) tested NZ's volunteer soldiers on a distsnt battlelfield. It was the two major world wars in the first 50 years of the 1900s that were to produce ultimate tests for NZ soldiers and it is the badges from these that are most prominant in this study, but including those many sections of the Army giving essential services to those in the front line. While the book target is military badge collectors, it will also interest any student of the NZ Army's history. First published by the author in 1970 as a limited edition of 1000 copies, of which this is No 160 with author's ink signature below his edition limited number on the.half-title, printed by Pelorus Press. 254 pages, b/w badge illustrations begin page 52 continuing to page 244, up to 18 images on douple-page spreads, usually with three or four on average text pages. frontis shows South Canterburty Rife Battalion badge.
