Add to basketFirst edition, 8vo, pp. xxiii, [1], 502; color frontispiece after a sketch by Francis Younghusband, and 9 wood engraved plates, plus text illustrations, one folding map; original yellow cloth; spine cocked, lower hinge starting, owner's signature on half title, occasional light foxing, very good. James was a British officer in the Indian Civil Service. He spent a two-year leave traveling through Manchuria, and was accompanied on this trip by Harry English Fulford, and a then 23-year-old Francis Younghusband. The men were ostensibly on a surveying trip, but had been charged with running intelligence on Russian forces in the area. The first six chapters of The long white mountain are largely derivative contextual notes, but the rest of the book is an account of the group's travels, including run-ins with brigands and Russian agents, hunting, and an ascent of the titular mountain. This was the first major expedition of Younghusband's career, and resulted in his admission as the youngest member of the Royal Geographical Society.
