John Forster (1812-1876), English biographer and critic, best known for his excellent Life of Charles Dickens. Forster met Dickens in 1836, and became his close friend and adviser. Dickens modeled Our Mutual Friend character John Podsnap on Forster, and his rooms are said to be the basis for the residence of lawyer Tulkinghorn in Bleak House. From the Pickwick Papers onwards Forster saw the manuscripts of nearly all Dicken's novels before the were published, and Dickens appointed him as his literary executor. Forster's biography was first published in three volumes - 1872-4. The copy above is the first American issue of the Memorial Edition and is undated - circa 1920s. 2 volumes, frontispieces, illustrations, plates. Vol 1 - xxxiv, 481pp. Vol 2 - xxvi, 514pp.The books are very brightand clean with tight, square binding. Unmarked except for a tiny correction noted on the tissue guard to the frontis of volume 1. Moderate wear on board edges. Burgundy endpapers. NB: vintage newspaper cuttings(early to mid 20th Century) about Dickens have been stuck to the front and back endpapers. Cuttings on front give the cast of a 1940s radio adaptation of 'A Tale of Two Cities' and there is a teacard type colour illustration. Pencil inscription/note on the back endpaper. Tissue guard before title page. Foxing and tanning on page edges. Top edges of pages are gilt edged, the gilt has some wear from age. Previous owner name/date on half title page in pencil. A binding error affects pages 533-540(the bottom edges of these pages are not in alignment with the rest of the book, but they are all securely bound and no text is affected. They are all index pages). Page 309-310 appears to have some extra trim on the side edge of the page and is therefore slightly creased. Black and white illustrations. Clean, tight pages.
