Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, xvi, 184 pp, plates. From the blurb: "This is not an orthodox text-book. It is more in the nature of a causerie, based on the works of a limited number of artists. It is a causerie, however, of a purposeful kind, and whilst being readably discursive, deals chronologically with the history and scope of the Japanese print, not, as in so many of the publications on the subject, with the collector primarily in mind, but with an appeal to the far wider public who are interested in art generally. The artists chosen represent a personal choice of the author's. The admitted greatest are purposely omitted since they already dominate the general "introductions" and are the subject of numerous monographs. Each artist included has, however, made a significant and personal contribution to the Japanese print, and becomes the centre of a theme developed by the author on some facet of the art of the print and its meaning for us today. Moreover, this change of focus enables us to view the principal masters from entirely new angles. It is this rather oblique approach that entitles the author to describe the book as a "New Approach".' Endpapers a little darkened, Good in price-clipped and slightly torn dustwrapper.
