London: Cassell, [c.1874-1880]. Handsome Victorian edition of this classic pigeon fancier's reference, richly illustrated with full-colour plates by Ludlow. Half leather with gilt-tooled spine, raised bands, and marbled edges. The binding shows wear with scuffing to the leather and some marking to the boards; a few splits between gatherings though holding soundly, light foxing throughout. Previous owner's name and bookbinder's stamp to front endpaper. A well-used but appealing copy with the patina of age. The text covers standards for judging, care and maintenance, and even medicinal advice for pigeons, alongside extensive studies of breeds?some of which are now vanished or extinct. Both a practical manual and a record of lost varieties, this is an important and collectible work in the history of aviculture.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Bound in green beveled boards with gilt and black decorations, 392 pp plus 8 pp ads. This copy with a book plate from C Curry Bohm and a gift inscription from Flora S. Richardson, the widow of his friend, William D Richardson. This copy with all 50 color plates and tissue guards present, plus numerous line drawings. Obviously a well loved copy. I left the book marks in place. Edges and gutters have been reinforced with black tape.There is foxing with it being primarily on the borders and backs of the plates. The front end paper and one plate with its tissue guard are detached but present. An interesting association to this famous Brown County, Indiana artist who also worked in Glouster, Massachusetts and Tennessee.

Viii PP + 392 pages and 50 full page colour chromolitho plates of the various breeds. some light foxing to a small number of the plates, mainly the reverse and edges, all clean and bright otherwise, some foxing to the frontispiece, mainly from the back and a few on the title page also, but minor blemishes, original half calf worn and some rubbing to the surfaces, plain cloth boards, two names of owners, one on the white side of the green endpapers "H. H. Price from father" dates to the book when new and another for Roger J Wood, 1967. (we believe this to be the zoologist and geneticist one at Manchester University, dept of Zoology). Large quarto. Undated c1874-1881.

Contemporary full green morocco gilt (extremities a bit scuffed). First edition in book form, originally issued in fifty monthly parts. With magnificent and detailed illustrations of numerous species of exotic pigeons. A contemporary reviewer for the "Journal of Horticulture and Practical Gardening", volume 30 1876, describes Fulton, the successful author of a book on poultry, as "born a fancier, by taste a fancier, by trade a dealer in high-class pigeons, and an exhibitor with success of every variety; his mind stored with valuable pigeon-knowledge". Illustrated with 50 colour chromolithographic plates (including frontispiece) - all by J.W. Ludlow. Many in text b/w illustrations. Boards in very good condition. Contents in good clean condition with a little light foxing to extremities of a few pages. Undated, but circa 1890. viii, 392 pp. 280 x 220 mm (11 x 8¾ inches). .

Fifty colored plates + text illustr, 11 x 9, 3/4 blindstamped and gilt ruled leather with patterned green cloth, spine is highly decorated with slightly raised bands, red spine label with gilt lettering, marbled edges and endpapers, 392 pp. Covers worn, rubbed (esp back cover), shelfworn, foredge fraying, corners and spine tips bumped and worn, spine tips chipped, leather scuffed/scraped, loss of leather along outer hinges, front inner hinge cracked, rear cover detached, title page heavily spotted and soiled else scattered spotting and soiling , two pages and one plate have a vertical tear on either top or bottom margin, plate that is supposed to be opposite page 311, "Satinette and Sub-Varieties" was bound in opposite page 211, lacks tissue guards else complete and good. Originally issued in 50 parts.

Quarto. Half black calf, dark cloth bds. Raised compartments to spine, gilt, contrasting label. 50 beautiful chromo lithographs in colour, with tissue guards. Some foxing to eps and throughout, mainly to edges. Upper hinge visible. Edges sl. worn , bds. sl. bumped, but altogether a very lovely book.
