Some preliminary pages expertly repaired plus some stains, particularly in the tables at the back and 1 plate, and marginal repairs. A handsome copy of this interesting work.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good indeed. Reprint. The poem, 'The Mind of the Front' is present and precedes the frontis and title page, which are followed by the Preface xxxii, and the Contents 24pp. // Then follows 'The Life of the Valiant and Noble Sir Walter Raleigh, Knight. With his Tryal at Winchester'; printed for George Dawes et al, Third Edition, 1687, and consisting of the portrait frontis, the title page, and the 41pp of text. // These are followed by the 813pp of the main work; [2]pp 'To the Reader'; [26]pp Chronological Table; and [16]pp Alphabetical Table of Contents. This volume, mighty as it is, written while Raleigh was imprisoned in the Tower of London, 'using a wide array of sources in six languages' (Wikipedia), and first published in 1614, takes us up only to the Roman era: it was conceived as being but the 'First Part' - another two projected volumes were never written. // Included in the main work are 2 genealogical diagrams, plus 6 double-page maps, and 2 double-page battle plans. The contents are in very good order: after a little light soiling to the pages preceding the Preface, and a lightly pencilled early 19thC ownership note to the back of the frontis, text and plates are fresh and bright thoughout, pages slightly cockled, with 1cm singe spots at perhaps half a dozen openings: no foxing or tanning or damage to pages. Not entirely perfect, though: there is a severe and ancient brown ink stain at the opening p.10/11, principally affecting the inner margin, rendering some of p.10 hard to decipher, and with some slight staining to the adjacent openings pp8/9 and pp12/13. And that's about it. // Folio, c.37x23.5cms, in a new geometrically-decorated half binding of brown calf, using the original firm but very scuffed and patinised marbled boards, refurbished, and with the original spine label laid down. Large thick quarto [folio size but bound 8 pages to the signature] measuring approx. 14.5 x 9 inches, bound in 20th century black cloth with silver lettering on spine, new endpapers; lacks all preliminaries before the rubricated title page [save for a grubby blank leaf]; Third edition, the first with The Life and Tryal of the Author added. Paginated title page, xxxii Preface, [xxiv] Contents, t.p. Life, (41), 813, [44]; internally clean tight and unmarked VG+, as are the 7 folding maps and chronological tables at the rear. Apparently lacks one folding map and engraved title page, as well as Jonson's poem, priced accordingly.

This volume is considered to be a First Thus of this edition, the inside contents are clean, complete, and tight, front and rear covers with the first end paper for each detached but present, leather spine shows wear and has four raised bands with five decorated compartments with the title and authors name stamped in gold, book starts out with "The LIFE of Sir Walter Ralegh, 232 pages (i-ccxxxii), with ERRATA appearing at the bottom of page 232, followed by "THE TRIAL OF SIR WALTER RALEGH, k nt. For HIGH TREASON At Winton the 17th of November, 1603, I Jac, I. , 14 pages (ccxxxvii-ccl) followed by 8 pages listing authors cited with the last page being an ad for the PHOENIX BRITANNICUS followed by 19 page preface, then followed by Chapter descriptions and paragraphs of books 1-5 which consists of 21 pages, followed by the start of the first book of the History of the World continuing through all five books, 817 pages followed by 2 pages of "TO THE READER" followed by 10 page chronological table and a 19 page index, all fold out maps are present and in excellent shape, covers and end papers need to be reattached but have protected book well over the years as the inside pages are clean, complete, and tight. Extra postage for this large/heavy volume.

Full Leather. Condition: Good. Whereunto is added in this edition, the life and tryal of the author. Hinges cracked and chipped. Corners heavily bumped, pockmarks and scratches to boards. spine leather cracked with some minor loss to ends, title faded. Bookplate to front pastedown, front endpapers a little loose, creased and chipped due to front gutter being cracked. Some ink notations to margins of preface pages. Content clean and sturdy, text and maps crisp and bright. Size: Folio.
