In overall very good used condition with only minor signs of age, handling and storage - boards with slight crushing to cloth at spine head and tail, and a couple of corners a touch rounded. Binding tight and appears little read - title page remains uncut to bottom edge. Internally clean, no annotation or inscriptions; slight toning to page-ends but text bright and clear throughout. Photographs available. Not an old library book.

Hardcover. 300p., first American edition in fine black cloth boards titled and decorated gilt, and enclosed in the dust jacket. Top edge tinted red. The casebinding is bright (both cloth and gilt) and square, a very presentable copy with one big problem and several minor ones: biggest, that the first half of text bears occasional underlines or small marginal brackets. These pencilings are erasable, and few enough to tackle, but unfortunately the soft thick paperstock on which this Maugham is printed gets minutely rucked up by even a superior eraser. So we desisted. Other "problems" are: the two inch-long lines of clear tape that have been applied verso to stabilize splits in front flap joint. Inconspicuous, but must be noted. Then, a neat but uninteresting ownership to pastedown. Then.the dust jacket is also a little edgeworn across its top margin, and has some strange upright toning to front panel.

Bound in black cloth covered hard boards with gilt lettering and decoration to the spine and upper board. Without the jacket. The boards are bright and clean, gilt remains bright, there is a tiny split to the cloth at the top corner of the spine, corners of the boards are sharp, slight bow to upper board. Internally there is spotting to the endpapers, prelims and last couple of pages, otherwise clean inside, no previous owner markings. Overall the book is in Very Good Minus condition.

First edition of what's generally considered one of Maugham's best travel works, recounting his travels in Siam, Cambodia, Burma and Vietnam.

Paper throughout book is slightly age-toned.  The binding is tight and hinges intact.  The dust jacket is still in one piece, but soiled and shelfworn, with wear, small chips/tears, to edges and folds.
