An uncommon, thoroughly interesting twenty-four volume set of 'The Camden Society' publications rare to find in such a nice uniform run. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and blindstamped decoration. 'A Roll of the Household Expenses of Richard de Swinfield, Volume I' has been rebacked with the original spine laid down. Many pages from 'Three Chapters of Letters relating to the Suppression of Monasteries' are unopened. With an armorial nameplate for William Colborne to the front pastedown of 'King Edward the Fourth'. Several of the volumes are bound by Edmonds & Remnants with a bookbinder's label on the front or rear pastedowns. The Camden Society, named after the early English historian William Camden, was founded in 1838 in London to publish early historical and literary materials, both unpublished manuscripts and new editions of rare printed books. By the 1880s, the Camden Society was experiencing financial problems, brought about in part by a project to create a general index to its first 100 volumes. In 1896, the Society merged with the Royal Historical Society. In a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with slight bumping to extremities. Damp staining to boards, 'Historie of Edward IV'. Marks to boards, 'Richard de Swinfield, Volume II'. Hinges mostly slightly strained, but firm. Several hinges just starting. First few pages of 'Jocelini de Brakelonda' reinforced with good quality paper to gutter. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with occasional spotting and handling marks in several volumes. Ink signatures to several front pastedowns and free-endpapers. Nameplate to front pastedown of 'Jocelini de Brakelonda', and plates of 'St Edmunds Bury Abbey' to free-endpapers, along with slightly browned watermarks to frontispiece. Nameplates and institutional labels to front endpapers, 'Polydore Vergil'. Institutional ink stamp to half-title, 'Archpriest Controversy'. Good. book.
