Illustrated throughout with frontispiece, fourteen plates, and many illustrations. Originally written for the Quarterly Review in 1837, these three papers explore the subjects of horse riding, hunting, horse-drawn vehicles and chases. Written by Nimrod, or Charles James Apperley, a Welsh sportsman and sporting writer from an English family, and often resident in both countries. In the original quarter green cloth binding with red cloth boards. Externally, sound with bumping and light rubbing to the extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinges tender but firm. Pages are bright and clean. Previous owner's bookplate to the front paste down. Bookseller's label also to the front pastedown. Good. book.

Bound in original half vellum, gilt, over cream marbled boards; spine with contrasting morocco title label, gilt. Top edge gilt, fore and lower edges deckled. A little wear to extremities and browning of fore edge, but otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate, Cluny Castle. Illustrated by 21 plates, with 6 in colour, including frontispiece, and in black and white, including one portrait reproduction and 6 pen and ink portraits. The three parts cover fox hunting, coach driving and horse racing and originally appeared in the Quarterly Review of 1835 and in book form, 1837 and 43. Nimrod was the pseudonym of the Welsh fox hunter, later sporting writer, Charles James Apperley (1785-1843). Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851) was a painter and engraver of sporting scenes, who often co-operated with Nimrod. The bookplate is from Cluny Castle, Aberdeenshire and has the arms of Clan Macpherson, with the motto, Touch not the cat bot a glove.
