No dust jacket present. The book has some wear, fading, and staining. This work starts out with "A Private Note to the Teacher'. In this note he calls attention to the previous general lack of discussion of the critically important aspect of musical instruction, that of ear-training. Percy Alfred Scholes OBE Ph.D. FSA FRHistS FTSC (24 July 1877 - 31 July 1958) was an English musician, journalist and prolific writer, whose best-known achievement was his compilation of the first edition of the Oxford Companion to Music. His 1948 biography The Great Dr. Burney was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. At various times Scholes was music critic for the Evening Standard (1913-1920), The Observer (1920-1925) and the Radio Times (1923-1929). From 1923 up until 1928 he was making regular music appreciation broadcasts on BBC radio. He was made an Officer of the Star of Rumania in 1930 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries in 1938. He was founder and general secretary of the Anglo-American Conference on Musical Education, Lausanne (1929 and 1931). Shortly before his death, his "professional" library was acquired by the National Library of Canada. This comprised approximately 50 linear meters of research files and correspondence. Ear training is a music theory study in which musicians learn aural skills to identify pitches, intervals, melody, chords, rhythms, solfeges, and other basic elements of music, solely by hearing. Someone who can identify pitch accurately without context is said to have "perfect pitch". The application of this skill is somewhat analogous to taking dictation in written/spoken language. As a process, ear training is in essence the inverse of sight-reading, the latter being analogous to reading a written text aloud without prior opportunity to review the material. Ear training is typically a component of formal musical training and is a fundamental, essential skill required in music schools. For accurate identification and reproduction of musical intervals, scales, chords, rhythms, and other audible parameters a great deal of practice is often necessary. Exercises involving identification often require a knowledgeable partner to play the passages in question and to assess the answers given. Second Edition [stated], Second Impression [stated].
